Innovative research exhibition recognised in national awards

The technology transfer specialist behind an innovative exhibition showcasing some of The University of Nottingham’s most exciting inventions has been recognised for his impact on science and the economy.

The Technology Demonstrator Facility, based at The University of Nottingham Innovation Park next to Jubilee Campus, was developed by Dr George Rice of the University’s Research and Innovation Services Team. Dr Rice has been named Newcomer of the Year at the 2010 Impact Awards.

These annual awards recognised those who have made outstanding contributions to science and the economy through innovation. The judges noted that Dr Rice’s initiatives: “are resulting in step change improvements in the commercialisation of individual technologies and general engagement of a wide range of stakeholders with the University’s knowledge transfer agenda.”

The Technology Demonstrator Facility features exhibits spanning the development cycle in engineering and physical sciences research at the University. These range from initial design concepts through to successfully-trading spin-out companies and products that already impact on our daily lives.

”The technology demonstrator project has enhanced the communication of often complex technologies and in doing so has raised the awareness of the impact University research can have both in the commercial environment and on the public as a whole,” said Dr Rice. ”I am extremely grateful for the support I have received from my academic and technology transfer colleagues other my other collaborators including the Design Council.”

The award was presented to Dr Rice by science communicator Maggie Philbin at the East Midlands Conference Centre on University Park.
