Welcome to Nottingham
Counting heads at the turn of the century, the 2001 Census put the populations of Nottingham city at 266,988, Greater Nottingham at 621,988 and the East Midlands at 4,172,174.
That means a lot of people living and working in the midst of a fascinating heritage of inventiveness, creativity and go-getting talent and expertise.
Nottinghamshire is linked with countless world class achievers like famous literary giants D H Lawrence and Lord Byron, the international designer Sir Paul Smith and artist Dame Laura Knight. The county is proud of former Nottinghamshire High School for Girls pupil Stella Rimington who became the first woman head of MI5, and of its superb sportsmen Harold Larwood and Brian Clough. It revels in the pageantry which attracts both locals and tourists to the legends of Robin Hood and Maid Marian.
Like many other inventors and trailblazers of before and since, each of our famous sons and daughters has carved his or her own path towards success. They have shown the world that greatness begins with an idea.
Today, a continuous stream of exciting and startling achievements is emerging and flourishing in our midst. Many of these successes stand testimony to the county’s fine educational and technological facilities as well as individual and personal excellence. Not only does Nottinghamshire have more than 7,000 science students at two of the UK’s leading universities, but its high tech strengths include 3,000 research projects and more than 62,000 people working in science and technology.
But it’s not all about work in Nottingham. We have excellent shopping facilities and top notch fashion outlets. You can take the tram into the city centre to enjoy great theatre, films, concerts and sport in superb venues. Dine out in style in one of our many fine restaurants. Unwind in a chic bistro or take a step back in time in one of our famously old pubs. Feel restored and relaxed in the lovely countryside. Marvel at magnificent Newstead Abbey, wander around one of our English Heritage sites or explore Robin Hood’s Sherwood Forest by bike. Find out more at Experience Nottinghamshire.
