Green-Tech Nottingham

A centre for excellence in environmental technologies

Over the decades Nottingham has been at the forefront of UK energy generation; an industry that today contributes almost £3.5 billion to the East Midlands’ economy.

But as environmental concerns create an urgent need to replace traditional, finite resources, the spotlight is firmly on science and business to seek out new solutions and turn ideas into commercial reality.

It’s up to local government to provide an environment in which innovation can thrive at a regional level, which is why Nottingham City Council is leading the way. Through the Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change and the Climate Protection Strategy, the city is committed to a 30% CO2 reduction by 2020 and becoming completely carbon neutral by 2100.

The council is already the third largest purchaser of green energy in Europe and 60% of its energy requirements come from renewable sources. In some city housing you can find solar thermal panels and ground source heat pumps, while some of our schools are already turning to biomass boilers instead of oil and coal heating systems.
